Internet in University Halls of Residence
How to connect to the internet in one of the Halls of Residence of Ghent University
Dutch version.
High-speed internet connection by cable
- Connect your computer to an available network connection socket in your room, using a UTP cable (not a phone cable!)
Please note that all existing connections should be respected. Not all outlets are available, so try to connect to an available, marked network-outlet in the wall or on the Student Internet device.
Please do not remove existing connections! This will cause an intervention in your living unit.
If you don't have a UTP cable, you will have to buy one. - You can surf immediately to the portal site http://hotspot.studenteninternet.be.
Please use your UGent login and password to connect and surf on the internet.
Please note the house rules, linked to the use of the internet. - No VPN-connection is necessary in these homes.
Please note that if you do set up a VPN-connection, certain bandwidth limitations should be kept in mind!
More than 1 device?
Connecting two devices in a UGent Hall of Residence is possible, but please use a regular SWITCH for that.
Do NOT USE a router: these are not allowed since these can cause network issues.

You can connect wirelessly to Eduroam by provider studenteninternet, but a connection with a cable is by definition always more stable, which results in a faster connection. Use the wifi only for your smartphone or tablet or occasional use.
So you should stream your courses with a cable!
In all common rooms of our Halls of Residence and in the living units of mentioned homes, you can connect to the network
Please note that the safety protocols for the Wifi-network in your room are different from those in our common rooms and abroad.
Your device might therefor connect elsewhere, but not in your room. Please check the necessary details here.
Use the Eduroam network, the 'eduroam_slow" network is the support for older devices.
