The Rectorate at Sint-Pietersnieuwstraat 25 will undergo a thorough renovation starting in 2027. The historic 1912 building next to Vooruit will be transformed into a modern, sustainable, and efficient working environment for the rector and university services.
Preparations and relocation
In the run-up to the renovation, current university services, including the rector’s offices, will be temporarily relocated to other sites.
Once the building has been completely vacated, the renovation will begin with a structural strip-out, reducing the building to its bare framework. A major intervention involves the removal of the fourth floor, which was added in the 1950s.
A pleasant and green working environment
The renovated Rectorate will be a bright and pleasant place to work. By opening up a patio around the historic chimney, daylight will reach the ground floor. The patio will feature a green roof and planted walls, contributing to a sustainable environment. The corridor alongside the patio will become an inviting, open space.
Office spaces will mostly be located on the square-facing side of the building, overlooking the new bicycle parking with trees and the garden near building T1.
Support functions (stairs, lifts, logistics rooms, toilets, etc.) will be situated on the side facing Vooruit.
Construction timeline
Due to limited space for site setup, construction will only begin after the completion of the new bicycle parking, which is planned for early 2027.
The renovation of the Rectorate itself will take around one and a half years, with completion and occupation expected by the end of 2028.
More about Campus Ufo: building projects
First, the Rectorate car park will be thoroughly redeveloped into a modern bicycle parking.
Campus Ufo will also feature a new student centre, a student square, and building T4 will be given a new purpose.
