Ghent University students win world diplomacy championships

(01-04-2025) Belgium has won the World Student Diplomacy Championship.

The world championship, in the form of a competitive simulation of the United Nations, took place this year in the Philippine capital Manila. The team from MUN Society Belgium (MSB) clinched the world title!

Every year, Harvard WorldMUN (Model United Nations) organises the World Cup, which is modelled on the procedure used by the United Nations. During the five-day conference, 1,000 to 1,500 young people from some 100 countries around the world step into the shoes of diplomats and defend the interests of the country they represent.

The Belgian team, made up of students from universities across the country, represented China, Colombia and Egypt.

‘We represented China and Colombia respectively within the Commission on Disarmament and International Security (DISEC) on the topic of internal displacement and violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo,’ says law student Simon Bruneel. ‘Given the sensitivity of the topic, it was not always easy to reach compromises with countries pursuing opposite policies. Nevertheless, after five days of intense debates and negotiations, a joint resolution was adopted.’

And again this year, Belgium won the championship. It is already the 12th time our country has emerged victorious with our students.
