Horizon Europe Cluster 6: Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment
R&I in the Horizon Cluster 6 aims to (advance knowledge, build capacities as well as develop and demonstrate innovative solutions that will) accelerate the transition to: a sustainable and circular management and use of natural resources ensuring ecosystem integrity as well as sustainable development and human well-being, including food and nutrition security(, in the EU and globally).
R&I activities under this Cluster shall create the following interlinked, long-term impacts:
- Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and successful adaptation of ecosystems and production systems as well as rural, coastal and urban areas to climate change
- Halt of biodiversity decline and restoration of ecosystems
- Sustainable and circular management and use of natural resources; prevention and removal of pollution; healthy soils and clean water and air for all; attractive jobs, enhanced value creation and competitiveness
Structure of the Cluster 6 programme
The research programme under cluster 6 consists of 7 destinations:
- Destination 1: Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (call ID: BIODIV)
- Destination 2: Fair, healthy and environmentally-friendly food systems from primary production to consumption (call ID: FARM2FORK)
- Destination 3: Circular economy and bioeconomy sectors (call ID: CIRCBIO)
- Destination 4: Clean environment and zero pollution (call ID: ZEROPOLLUTION)
- Destination 5: Land, oceans and water for climate action (call ID: CLIMATE)
- Destination 6: Resilient, inclusive, healthy and green rural, coastal and urban communities (call ID: COMMUNITIES)
- Destination 7: Innovative governance, environmental observations and digital solutions in support of the Green Deal (call ID: GOVERNANCE)
Under each destination, specific topics are released either as Research & Innovation Actions, Innovation Actions or Coordination and Support Actions.
Underlying ambitions and policies
The collaborative research project in Cluster 6 will accelerate the ecological transition required by the Green Deal, to achieve a climate neutral Europe by 2050. The research efforts will focus on natural carbon sinks, reduction of GHG emissions, reducing the dependency on non-renewable resources and exploiting the potential of biological resources for renewable products. As such, the programme in this Cluster is in line with the objectives set out in several EU policies such as the Circular Economy Action Plan, the EU industrial Strategy, the Bioeconomy Strategy, the EU Forest Strategy, the Blue Growth Strategy, the Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability and the EU Plastics Strategy.
