How will my salary be determined?

Seniority
In addition to job level, seniority also plays a role in determining your salary. There are two types of seniority:
- You build up scale seniority during your career at Ghent University. After four years in a salary scale, you are promoted to the next salary scale if you meet the conditions. As a rule, you start your career at Ghent University within the lowest salary scale of the job category. People who start at Ghent University but have already built up experience elsewhere that is relevant to and at the level of the position, can start in a higher salary scale under certain conditions. The same principles are applied here as in the career model. After the final selection, the selection committee determines which work experience is considered job-relevant and makes a proposal on grading. The University Board has the final say on this.*
- By monetary seniority we mean all the work experience you have accumulated in your career within and outside Ghent University. This includes all paid work, with the exception of student jobs, internships and voluntary work. Seniority acquired outside Ghent University can, under certain conditions, be included in the calculation of your salary. When you start at Ghent University, we ask you to submit employment certificates from previous employers. This allows us to accurately calculate your total number of years of work experience and take it into account when determining your salary. Once you are employed by Ghent University, your monetary seniority increases every year or every two years.
*For job class D, the grading is done differently, following recent improvements in the salary conditions for this job class.
How do I interpret the salary scales?
In the job posting, you will always find the job class and the associated salary scales. You can then consult the gross, non-indexed annual salary in the above salary scales.
- The columns are the various salary scales.
- The rows represent the number of years of monetary seniority (the steps).
Disclaimer: It is always the University administration that has the final say on the salary scale assigned. The information on this page only provides a tool for applicants to estimate salary and is in no way binding. The step is determined after submission of employment certificates.
