Compensation of the ZAP

How will my salary be determined?

Your salary will be determined based on the following elements:

  • The level of the job (job class) and the associated salary scales
  • Your seniority

Level of function

There are 4 job classes, depending on the level of the job. There are certain salary scales associated with each job class.

Range Required diploma General job title Salary scales
ZAPFT1 Diploma of doctor on dissertation (PhD) Full time assistant professor ZAPFT1 en ZAPFT1A
ZAPFT2 Diploma of doctor on dissertation (PhD) Full time associate professor ZAPFT2 en ZAPFT2A
ZAPFT3 Diploma of doctor on dissertation (PhD) Full time full professor ZAPFT3
ZAPFT4 Diploma of doctor on dissertation (PhD) Full time senior full professor ZAPFT4

These job classes also apply to paid visiting professors.

Seniority

In addition to job level, seniority also plays a role in determining your salary.

By monetary seniority, we mean all work experience and experience as a researcher that you have accumulated in your career both inside and outside UGent. Seniority acquired outside UGent can be taken into account in the calculation of your salary under certain conditions. When you start at UGent, we ask you to submit employment certificates from previous employers. This allows us to accurately calculate your total number of years of work experience and take it into account when determining your salary.

Determination of seniority

For ZAP members, we first look at experience as a researcher after obtaining the master's degree to determine seniority. This is done through grading in the AAP5 salary scale as a doctor assistant.

The amount corresponding to the years of experience as a researcher in salary scale AAP5 will be carried over to the salary scale mentioned in the vacancy notice or assigned by the university administration.

The first next higher salary step in the applicable salary scale of ZAP is applied. Thus, it is the next higher salary in this salary scale that is awarded.*

If you are employed by another university of the Flemish Community before recruitment, the salary of your previous employment will be maintained and the grade classification will be retained, or the next higher salary if recruitment is carried out in a higher salary scale.

Once you are employed at UGent, your monetary seniority increases every three years.

How do I interpret the salary scales?

In the job announcement, you will always find the job class and the associated salary scales.

Then you can consult the gross, non-indexed annual salary in the salary scales above.

  • The columns are the various salary scales.
  • The rows represent the number of years of monetary seniority (the steps).
  • To know the indexed gross annual salary, multiply the amount by the current index. To know the gross monthly salary divide that amount by 12 months.
  • The net amount depends on your personal situation and varies depending on the tax withholding tax to be deducted. If you would like a calculation of the net, you can find gross-net simulators through an online search engine that will give you an indication of the amount you can expect.

* A correction mechanism can be applied if a salary scale is awarded and the salary for the first appointment is lower than the salary that ZAP member would have for the first next 3 years in an AAP career; or if the appointment is awarded in the second salary scale as a lecturer or senior lecturer and the ZAP member would thereby obtain a lower salary than if there were appointment in the first salary scale.

Disclaimer: It is always the University administration, on the advice of the selection committee, that has the final judgment on the salary scale awarded. The information on this page only provides an aid for applicants to estimate salary and is in no way binding. Only after the final selection can the final salary scale be communicated. The step will be determined after the submission of employment certificates.
