Internationalisation@Home
What is Internationalisation@Home?
Internationalisation@Home is a general term used for 'the purposeful integrating of international and intercultural dimensions in the formal and informal curriculum of all students" (Beelen & Jones, 2015). It refers to a broad range of initiatives that aim to offer every students and staff member of an institution the opportunity to develop his or her international/interculturel competencies, without having to go abroad. These initiatives can vary in format, organisation and furation, ranging from the organisation of guest lectures from international speakers to short-term virtual exchange projects with an international perspective.
Ghent University states in its Integrated Policy plan for Internationalisation (2019-2023) the crucial role of Internationalisation@Home for the fortifying of the international image of the institution as a pioneer in innovation, inclusion and social engagement. Our faculty effectively translates this statement in the following action plan:
- Developing innovative projects to facilitate international/intercultural competency development in both students and staff
- Working together with all stakeholders to improve the integration of our incoming international students through a solid, supported Buddy system
- Supporting teachers in integrating an international/intercultural dimension in their educational practice by offering technical/didactical support
- Offering a transparent and clear framework for teachers to apply for I@Home-budget and help organize their I@Home activities
