Global Minds Fund
The Global Minds Fund provides opportunities to the whole Ghent University community to collaborate with partners in the Global South in order to address the global challenges of sustainable development.
Calls for proposals are launched at regular intervals throughout the academic year. Below more information can be found about these calls.
Competitive calls
Explore/Valorise
We look for proposals from Ghent University researchers that want to explore a collaboration with one or more partners in the Global South or valorise the outputs of an already existing collaboration.

Research/Education Stays
The focus of this call is on proposals from Ghent University PhD students that want to have a research- or education-oriented stay (between 1-3 months) with partner organisation in the Global South.

Short Research Stays
This call targets researchers from one of 37 eligible countries in the Global South, and who wish to spend between 1 and 3 months as a visiting researcher at Ghent University to support and expand their ongoing research on sustainable development challenges.

Short Teaching Stays
This call targets researchers, lecturers and practitioners from one of 37 eligible countries in the Global South, and who wish to spend between 1 and 3 months at Ghent University to strengthen joint teaching capacities on sustainable development issues and global citizenship.
Short Training Programmes
This call provides UGent-based staff member and their international partners in the Global South with funding to organize summerschools or other training programmes that engage with sustainable development issues and associated transversal skills.

Sensitizing Events
This call targets all members of the Ghent University community (students, researchers, staff, alumni) that want to organize events or actions with the objective to sensitize and engage a Ghent University audience on issues related to sustainable development challenges in the Global South.
Permanent call
Travel Grants
The Global Minds Fund provides travel grants to UGent students who want to pursue an internship or research stay in the Global South.
Internationalisation
The global minds funds is funding platforms and networks at UGent driving the internationalisation of the university.
Regional Platforms
The regional platforms offer support, facilities and advice to expand existing or set up new forms of cooperation, to the Ghent University community. The Global Minds Fund cofinances the ASEAN & South Asia Platform, CESAM Platform and the AFRICA Platform
International Thematic Networks
The international thematic networks (ITN) are cooperative networks consisting of Ghent University staff members and international partners concerning a specific topic of excellence in education and research.
Structural International Partnerships
The Structural International Partnerships (SIP) funded by Global Minds Ghent University focus on the university-wide cooperation with preferential partners in the Global South. The Global Minds Fund finances 7 Structural International Partnerships based on long-standing development cooperation partnerships: Can Tho University (Vietnam), ESPOL (Ecuador), Jimma University (Ethiopia), University of the Western Cape (South Africa), Hué University (Vietnam), Mountains of the Moon University (Uganda) and Mzumbe University (Tanzania).
Eligible countries
The Global Minds Fund covers 37 countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America. As of September 2022, 8 new countries are eligible for GMF-funded activities (in Bold in the table below).
