Flemish Institute for Biotechnology (VIB)
The Faculty of Sciences has had a strong partnership with the Flemish Institute for Biotechnology (VIB) for many years, a research institute focused on excellence in biotechnological research.
Close Scientific Partnership
The Flemish Institute for Biotechnology (VIB) was established in 1995 and has since developed into a leading research center in the life sciences, specializing in high-quality biotechnological research.
The Faculty of Sciences has built a strong and dynamic partnership with VIB over the years.
Many researchers from the departments of Plant Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, Biochemistry and Microbiology, and Biomedical Molecular Biology are affiliated with VIB. More than 30 professors from our faculty are also group leaders within VIB, spread across the following research centers:
- VIB-UGent Center for Plant Systems Biology (PSB)
- VIB-UGent Center for Inflammation Research (IRC)
- VIB-UGent Center for Medical Biotechnology (CMB)
This dual commitment provides intellectual, financial, and organizational benefits that enable groundbreaking and excellent research. The long-term framework agreement between Ghent University and VIB strengthens this collaboration. Through the joint commitment of talent, resources, and infrastructure, our partnership continues to be developed.
Results
Our collaboration with VIB places our researchers at the heart of the Flemish, Belgian, and European biotechnology cluster. This partnership leads to internationally recognized research results and groundbreaking innovations with high societal and economic value. Since 2012, a total of 19 ERC projects with WE-VIB affiliation have been awarded, making us a leader in the research landscape.
We are particularly proud of our close relationship with VIB and strive to continue to promote this collaboration in the future.
