Science outreach centers

The science outreach centers that are somehow connected to the Faculty of Sciences are listed below. Visits can be paid on individual basis or after appointment in group, but the explanation will be in Dutch. On some occasions English guidance may be possible. Please take contact in advance for inquiries.

The Botanical garden as well as GUM are located at Campus Ledeganck of the Faculty of Sciences, but are part of Ghent University's Centre for Academic Heritage and Archives.

Botanical garden

  • Situated near the Citadelpark of Ghent, the garden of 2,75 ha houses 10 000 plant species.

    Free entrance on office days from 9:00 till 16:30, on other days from 9:00 till 12:00.

Ghent University Museum (GUM)

  • The GUM is located at the heart of the Ghent Botanical Garden, right around the corner from MSK Ghent and S.M.A.K. The GUM is a museum dedicated to science, research and critical thinking, where visitors can discover that scholarship is the result of trial and error, doubt and imagination.

Public Observatory Armand Pien of Ghent University

  • In the city centre of Ghent, the old observatory of the University houses a public observatory. Free access on Wednesday evenings from 20:00 till 22:00.

Sundial on Campus Sterre

  • The analemmatic sundial on Campus Sterre is located on the most southern and sunny place on campus: in the lawn next to building S9. The sundial is easily accessible by following the jogging track along S8 and behind S9, parallel to the Krijgslaan.

Center for Data Analysis and Statistical Science

FIRE (Fostering Innovative Research based on Evidence) offers free statistical consulting to Ghent University doctoral students and postdocs.

FLAMES (FLAnders' Training Network for MEthodology and Statistics) is an inter-university training network providing statistical training for doctoral students.

Science Academy

The Science Academy (formerly: Academy for Lifelong Learning of the Faculty of Sciences, IPVW-ICES) is a logistic service of the Faculty of Sciences. On demand of the faculty and/or external partners we organize courses, conferences and other training activities on topical research areas within the field of exact sciences. Our teachers are active in the industry and/or teach at institutes for higher education.
