Grade conversion at FEA
Universities abroad often use a different grading system and scale than what we use at Ghent University. That means the grades you obtain abroad are not automatically incorporated into your Transcript of Records at UGent. Most grades have to be converted to "UGent grades".
Grade conversion options
The grade conversion FEA applies, depends on the information that is available from the receiving institution. There are 4 options:
- The received Transcript of Records specifies statistical distribution of grades (or percentiles):
- statistical distribution of grades (SD)
- cumulative percentages for all students (100% -> 20/20)
- cumulatieve percentages for all students that passed (100% -> 10/20) (CSD)
- The received Transcript of Records specifies ECTS grading scale (EGS)
- The received Transcript of Records specifies a percentage (so scale linearly to /20 (+ round). If range-% are used, use lowest number in range (+ round))
- No conversion method is mentioned
Option 1 is the most precise and will lead to a more accurate grade conversion. The accuracy of the grade conversion diminishes from option 2 to option 4.
Grade conversion table
According to these principles the results obtained abroad are converted to UGent grading system based on the faculty conversion table. This table serves as a guideline for the conversion of grades for students who go on exchange. The final decision is made by the Examination Committee, which can decide on a different conversion for justified reasons, including but not limited to changes in the partner university's grading system or details mentioned on the transcript of records.
The statistical distribution of grades used for the conversion is based on a reference group of all engineering students from our faculty over the past 4 academic years.
