Hand-In-Paw Against Cancer
Support research into cancer in animals
Cancer is a real problem for animals, just as for people. One in four dogs or cats, and one in ten horses will develop cancer. Every day, cats and dogs come to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine for cancer treatment, alongside over a hundred horses per year.
In the last decade, there has been a remarkable evolution in veterinary sciences whereby technologies from human medicine are increasingly being applied in veterinary medicine. There is a need for better and more targeted treatments. For these reasons, the Veterinary Oncological Network (VON) brings together researchers with expertise in many different areas of cancer research (from the lab to the clinic), while working closely with researchers in human cancer research.
Want to make a donation to Hand-in-paw against cancer?
Your donation to Hand-in-Paw against cancer helps researchers to achieve the following two aims:
- assessing the extent to which innovation in the treatment and diagnosis of human cancer can be applied when dealing with pet animals;
- studying pet animals that develop cancer spontaneously in order to learn about how cancer behaves in both animals and humans. For example, some types of tumour are rare in humans but not in animals. By researching these tumours in animals, we can collect more information more rapidly and use this to help both animals and humans.
A donation supports researchers in their work on cancer research and thus helps them start innovative and promising projects. A donation of €100, for example, will be used to conduct blood analyses in order to follow up on a veterinary patient in a clinical study. With a donation of €500, a marker can be fine-tuned allowing new colorations to study cancer in animals. With a donation of €1000, it is possible to store tissue from 25 animals in order to investigate the mechanism of the cancer on the basis of DNA analysis.
We gratefully welcome donations to Hand-in-Paw against cancer – you can donate via bank transfer to account number: BE26 3900 9658 0329 (BIC: BBRUBEBB), with the message “Hand-in-Paw against cancer". Your gift is tax deductible starting from €40 per year.
