prof. Wouter WillaertProf. Wouter Willaert studied at Ghent University and educated as a surgeon at UZ Gent.
Prof. Willaert focuses mainly on the treatment of peritoneal cancer by cytoreductive surgery (debulking), combined with intraperitoneal administration of chemotherapy (HIPEC) for cancers originating from the stomach, colon, appendix, rectum, ovary and peritoneum.


He also treats peritoneal cancer that can no longer be surgically removed with aerosol chemotherapy during successive keyhole surgery (PIPAC).


Prof. Willaert primarily researches the pathogenesis and treatments of peritoneal cancer. In addition, his research focuses on skills training for (para)medics. Prof. Willaert is first author of 15 scientific publications and co-author of more than 10 scientific articles. He is also a regular speaker at (inter)national conferences on the treatment of peritoneal cancer and on skills training for (para)medics.
